چکیده

A 9-year longitudinal study was performed to prospectively examine the association of alcohol consumption with development of aortic stiffness in 1121 aortic stiffness-free [aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) of less than 8.0 m/sec] Japanese men aged 35 to 59 years without definite hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, or diabetes. 274 men developed aortic stiffness (aortic PWV of 8.0 m/sec or more) during 8872 person-years follow-up. After controlling for potential predictors of aortic stiffness, the relative risk for increased aortic stiffness compared with non-drinkers was 1.01 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.62-1.64] for those who drank 0.1 to 22.9 g/day of ethanol, 1.71 (95% CI: 1.12-2.60) for those who drank 23.0 to 45.9 g/day of ethanol, 1.79 (95% CI: 1.18-2.71) for those who drank 46.0 to 68.9 g/day of ethanol, and 2.09 (95% CI: 1.35-3.26) for those who drank 69.0 or more g/day of ethanol (P for trend < 0.001). These results suggest that alcohol consumption is closely associated with development of aortic stiffness.

The Contribution of Inflammation to the Development of Hypertension Mediated by Increased Arterial Stiffness

BACKGROUND The mechanisms underlying the possible contribution of chronic inflammation to the development of hypertension remain unclear. We examined the longitudinal association of inflammation with the progression of vascular and/or renal abnormalities in the development of hypertension. METHODS AND RESULTS In 3274 middle-aged Japanese men without hypertension at the study baseline, brachia...

Increased Aortic Calcification Is Associated With Arterial Stiffness Progression in Multiethnic Middle-Aged Men.

Arterial stiffness is established as an independent predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The objective was to prospectively evaluate association of aortic calcification burden with progression of arterial stiffness in population-based samples of healthy middle-aged men from ERA JUMP cohort (Electron-Beam Computed Tomography and Risk Factor Assessment in Japanese and US Men in th...

Alcohol consumption, smoking, and subsequent risk of colorectal cancer in middle-aged and elderly Japanese men and women: Japan Public Health Center-based prospective study.

Few studies have examined the association of alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking with colorectal cancer in Asian populations whose genetic susceptibility to these factors are different from Western populations. We investigated this association and the joint effect of these factors, and estimated the population-attributable fraction to clarify the public health impact on a Japanese populat...

A prospective study of the health effects of alcohol consumption in middle-aged and elderly men. The Honolulu Heart Program.

BACKGROUND The study objective was to determine the association between reported alcohol consumption and total mortality, mortality from selected causes, and incident nonfatal chronic disease events in middle-aged (51 to 64 years old) and elderly (65 to 75 years old) men during an approximate 15-year follow-up period. METHODS AND RESULTS We conducted a prospective epidemiological study of Jap...

Association of alcohol consumption with incident hypertension among middle-aged and older Japanese population: the Ibarakai Prefectural Health Study (IPHS).

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of age on the relationship between alcohol consumption and incident hypertension in a general Japanese population. A cohort of Japanese men (n=37 310) and women (n=78 426) aged 40 to 79 years who underwent community-based health checkups from 1993 to 2004 and were free of hypertension were followed up with annual examinations, including the ...
